Work

I learned operations from the inside.

I started in customer service and fulfillment and grew into responsibility for the people, systems, products and decisions behind an approximately $80M ecommerce and media business.

The actual job

A lot of different things ended up on my desk.

Some of it fit neatly under operations. A lot of it did not.

01

Products

Taking an idea through formulas, ingredients, manufacturers, testing, labels, packaging, pricing and finally getting it out the door.

02

Legal and risk

Working with outside lawyers, gathering the facts, explaining the business side and making sure whatever needed to change actually changed.

03

Buildings

Finding locations, working through leases, planning layouts and getting warehouses and offices ready for people to work in.

04

Money

Watching the P&L, costs, pricing, inventory and vendor terms—and figuring out what was worth fixing, scaling or stopping.

05

Systems

Replacing software, connecting systems and handling payment or subscription problems without letting the business grind to a halt.

06

People

Hiring people, developing managers, making hard calls and keeping employees, owners, vendors and outside specialists moving in the same direction.

What that looked like

A few problems that needed solving.

Products

We needed products of our own.

We were selling mostly other companies’ products. I helped build a proprietary supplement line from the ground up—formulas, manufacturers, testing, labels, pricing and launches.

40–50 active SKUs · about 90% of revenue
Payments

The processor gave us 30 days.

That meant replacing one of the most important parts of the business without breaking checkout or recurring orders. I coordinated the processor, developers, testing and the cutover.

Purchases never stopped.
Warehouses

The obvious warehouse answer wasn’t the best one.

I compared the real costs and pushed for Kansas City and Columbus instead. Then I helped get both facilities open and operating.
